If you a considering a new shop floor fitout, there are a number of key lessons learnt from research on our previous fitouts that can have your retail space performing optimally, including:

• Place the lowest priced products at the front of the store to attract customers and display the higher priced products in high traffic areas within the store.


• Top selling products should be placed at eye level and add a display at the end of product aisles to encourage impulse buying.


• Retailers have often experienced more lucrative sales on the right hand side of a store, as customers tend to look and turn right when they first enter an establishment. Whatever your trend, consider taking advantage of your entry pattern and have your best and most enticing displays on the trending pathway (i.e. right hand side of your store). Once the customer turns right, create a pathway to lead them on a journey throughout your store that maximises exposure to as many of your products as possible.


• As customers wander the pathway, add media (i.e. print/audio/video) of discounts, demonstrations, with the aim of slowing their journey towards the exit. The addition of seating also helps to slow their progress through your establishment.


• Make sure that the aisles are wide enough for customers to walk through in comfort and don't forget to make it easy for parents with strollers or people in wheelchairs to navigate your store.


• One of the best additions to a store is seating for customers. A few minutes resting gives them additional time to cast their eyes over your products, areas where you know they make considered choices. Seating can provide relief for partners no loner in sync with the shopping experience, allowing the other to continue with a view on consumption.


• One of the more annoying retail fitout designs is the lack of counter space at the checkout. Trying to juggle handbags, shopping bags and young children at the register can be made a whole lot easier if there is enough counter space to place their bags while they find their credit cards.


• Always add an additional fixture or two at the register to encourage impulse buying. You can display discounted items or frequently bought items, so long as they are easily reached from the register.


• Design your store so that the aisles and fixtures can be easily changed. Customers become bored with the same layout and a quick change adds an extra spark of interest and encourages customers to return more often.
